1 Year Volunteer Statement of Commitment

The Mission Environmental Stewardship Society is supported by the City of Mission and is a co-operative effort between the society and the citizens of the City who wish to contribute to the appearance and safety of their community. Both parties therefore commit to each other to perform certain activities for keeping cleaner and safer streets, trails, parks and creeks. It is understood that at no time is the safety of any volunteer to be compromised in the performance of cleaning activities.

THE ADOPTER agrees to:

1. Remove litter along 1 block or more section of municipal street, trail, creek or park on occasion throughout one year. After each clean up, we ask and encourage volunteers to provide a report detailing their cleanup efforts through our website messociety.ca. Although volunteer reports are not mandatory, they are very helpful to our society’s data collection, litter analysis, and grant writing. If you decide to end your volunteer adoption early (prior to your year ending), we politely ask that you return your equipment to us so that it can be used for the next volunteer. As a non profit organization, this helps us minimize our costs.

   
   

2. Assure that all family members are given the appropriate tools and equipment to use during the clean-up and that all participating minors under the age of 18 are provided with adult supervision.

   
   

3. Avoid direct contact with items that have the potential to be hazardous or injurious. Items such as syringes, condoms and animal parts shall not be touched. Hazardous litter and exceptionally heavy or unyielding objects shall be reported immediately to MESS.

   
   

4. Report to MESS any injury incurred by any participant during clean-up activities. The injury will be reported within two working days of the incident and shall include:

   1. The name of the injured person

   2. The time and date of the incident

   3. The nature of the injury

   4. Details of the incident

   5. The name of any hospital or clinic attended

THE MISSION ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP SOCIETY agrees to:

1. Supply operating materials which may include, but not limited to, safety vests, bags or buckets and litter pickers.

2. Provide a safety orientation (please see your guide to safe litter pickup).

Release and Waiver Agreement

By signing this document you waive certain rights including the right to sue. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.

TO: THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF MISSION, ITS OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, DIRECTORS and VOLUNTEERS AND THE MISSION ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP SOCIETY (together called "THE RELEASEES").

ASSUMPTION OF RISK

I am aware that engaging in a MESS activity may involve certain risks, dangers and hazards, including, but not limited to picking up dangerous debris and collision with passing traffic. I agree to ensure that all participants wear a safety vest and use proper tools (such as gloves, tongs and/or EZ Reachers) while participating to minimize any such risks and I freely accept, and fully understand and assume all risks and dangers and the possibility of personal injury, death, property damage or loss resulting therefrom including NEGLIGENCE, BREACH OF CONTRACT; OR BREACH OF ANY STATUTORY OR OTHER DUTY OF CARE, INCLUDING ANY DUTY OF CARE OWED UNDER THE OCCUPIERS LIABILITY ACT R.S.B.C. 1996, C.337 on the part of the Releasees.

RELEASE OF LIABILITY, WAIVER OF CLAIMS AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT

By participating in the MESS program I hereby agree on behalf of myself and any other participants:

1. TO WAIVE ANY AND ALL CLAIMS that myself and our organization participants have or may in the future have against the Releasees.

2. TO RELEASE THE RELEASEES from any and all liability for any loss, damage, injury or expense that I/we may suffer or that my next of kin may suffer as a result of participating in the MESS Adopt-A-Block program due to any cause whatsoever, including negligence on the part of the Releasees and including NEGLIGENCE, BREACH OF CONTRACT, OR BREACH OF ANY STATUTORY OR OTHER DUTY OF CARE, INCLUDING ANY DUTY OF CARE OWED UNDER THE OCCUPIERS LIABILITY ACT R.S.B.C. 1996, C.337 on the part of the Releasees.

3. TO HOLD HARMLESS AND INDEMNIFY THE RELEASEES for any and all liability for any property damage or personal injury to any third party, resulting from our organizations participation in the program.

4. This Release shall be effective and binding upon myself and our organizations participants heirs, next of kin, executors, administrators and assigns, in the event of any one of ours death.

I have read this Release prior to signing it and I understand its effect. I am aware that by signing this Release I am waiving certain legal rights which I, my participants or our heirs, next of kin, executors, administrators and assigns may otherwise have had against the RELEASEES.
